Laguna Art Museum Presents Survey of Andy Moses’s Work by ArtNowLA Andy Moses, Geomorphology 1607, 2023. Laguna Art Museum presents Andy Moses: Into the Light, an exhibition on view through September 20, 2026. The show brings together more than two decades of work by the Los Angeles–based painter, focusing on his exploration of light, perception, and the intersection of abstraction and landscape. Moses, who was raised in coastal Los Angeles, has long examined the effects of light and atmosphere in his paintings. After spending the 1980s and 1990s in New York, he returned to Southern California, settling in Venice, where the region’s changing light conditions became a renewed point of focus. His work since that time has incorporated technical innovations, including curved and concave painting surfaces that alter the viewer’s spatial experience. The exhibition centers on paintings from the past twenty years, a period in which Moses has continued to refine a process that blends controlled technique with elements of unpredictability. His compositions often suggest natural phenomena—such as horizons, bodies of water, or atmospheric shifts—while remaining grounded in abstraction through their emphasis on color, surface, and structure. Moses’s work has frequently been discussed in relation to the Light and Space movement associated with Southern California, although his practice remains rooted in painting rather than installation or perceptual environments. Critics have also noted parallels between his use of color and scale and that of artists including Mark Rothko and Morris Louis, as well as earlier figures such as Claude Monet and J. M. W. Turner. Into the Light continues this line of inquiry, emphasizing how Moses’s paintings engage perception over time. Rather than presenting fixed images, the works respond to changes in vantage point and illumination, encouraging sustained observation. Andy Moses: Into the Light is organized by Laguna Art Museum and curated by Peter Frank.
