Jesse Darling, a sculptor from Oxford now living in Berlin, has been awarded the Turner Prize, which is regarded as the most important art award in the UK and comes with a purse worth £25,000, or about $31,500. Darling explores themes of labor, class, and power through a practice encompassing sculpture, installation, text, and drawing. He has stated that his work is inspired by “the effects of austerity, Brexit, and the pandemic” as well as the “hostile environment” immigration policy. Darling is most known for his body-like sculptures, most of which he creates with readily available, low-cost materials. Charlie Markbreiter wrote in Artforum in 2018 that “Jesse Darling’s practice situates this move within modernism’s theological underpinnings and legacy of progress, if the post-internet era uses new technology to position itself as a unique, irreparable break from the past.”
