California Museum Of Art Thousand Oaks Announces Third Annual Open Call

The California Museum of Art Thousand Oaks (CMATO) is seeking entries for its third annual competitive juried art exhibition. Regional, national and international artists are invited to submit original works in a variety of mediums that reflect the theme, “Defining Beauty.” Defining Beauty is intentionally vague, as conflicting objectives might be collected under its banner. Submissions are open to both established and emerging artists. The deadline to apply is March 12, 2020.

Jurors for the exhibition include the professors from the Art Departments of California Lutheran University, California State University Channel Islands, Moorpark College, and Ventura College.

Artists residing in the Conejo Valley region qualify for a reduced entry rate of $15 (Coupon Code: CVRA).

Defining Beauty will take place in the Museum’s main gallery with the selected featured artist displaying multiple works to represent the scope of their artistic practice. Selected contributing artists will have the opportunity to display at least three works each. Featured Artist award is $1,000 and Contributing Artists will receive $500 each.

To complement the exhibition, CMATO will create an online catalogue, including essays on the artists and their works. The exhibition will also be presented on CMATO’s website.

The exhibition will go on view May 8-August 23, 2020.

CMATO’s Open Call program was established in 2017 to provide an avenue for artists to reach new audiences through the support of a curated museum exhibition.

“As the featured artist in a three-person exhibition, I had the wonderful opportunity for my work to be prominently displayed at CMATO. Beyond the exhibition, the museum invited me to give an artist’s talk, featured me on their website and had a wonderful piece written on my work by a writer who regularly contributes to Art in America. This opportunity has no doubt led to other museum exhibition opportunities, artist talks and acquisitions,” said Rebecca Rutstein, CMATO’s 2017 featured artist.

Eligibility Requirements:

Open to artists worldwide
Artists must be 18 years old or older
Artists may be at any stage of their career
All mediums are accepted, including video and installation
All entries must represent original works of art
Entry Fees:

$35 (USD), limit three samples; Conejo Valley residents, $15 (USD)
All fees are non-refundable
